August-School Supplies for Oakland Families in Need

COLLECT SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO DONATE IN AUGUST:

With all the children's books, pens, pencils, and toys that so many of us have overflowing our closets, basements and attics, it is amazing that only a few miles away, there are Oakland schools who lack even the basic necessities to educate children. Fortunately, Temple Beth Abraham is doing something about it! Please start collecting school supplies, and in August (and through the first week of the Gan and Bet Sefer), we will have bins around the synagogue grounds to collect school supplies for donation to the Oakland Small Schools Foundation (http://www.smallschoolsfoundation.org/) and Oakland Parents Literacy Project (http://www.oplp.org/). The Oakland Parents Literacy Project estimates that 72% of Oakland third graders read below grade level and 17% are illiterate - a staggering figure that we should not tolerate, as a Jewish community, committed to education.
