The title comes from a Harry Chapin song entitled “Mr. Tanner.” It’s about the owner of a dry cleaning business who has such a beautiful voice that his friends insist he try to sing professionally. It’s a long song, but the gist of it is that he spends his money to arrange a concert, gets panned by the critics, and then never sings again.
Each year on the High Holidays, we ask members to bring in a grocery bag filled with non-perish-
able food items. This food drive is part of a national program called “Operation Isaiah.”
Perhaps no aspect of our Centennial Project is so immediately visible to the naked eye as the new carpet in the sanctuary. Especially compared to the mustard yellow that it replaced, the new purplish carpet certainly makes a statement. Why such a bright color?
Some years I like the subject of my sermons on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to be a surprise; this year I am going to try the opposite approach and give you the titles in advance. I am also exploring recording them in advance and putting the videos on YouTube. So there will be a variety of ways to “get the message” this year.”
